Design Optimization of Battery-Electric Marine Vessels via Geometric Programming

This paper proposes formulating conceptual-stage vessel design optimization problem as a geometric program, which can be transformed into convex problem. The programming modeling approach offers significant advantages in efficiency, reliability and automation over the general nonlinear methods typically used naval architecture. Focusing on battery-electric vessels, compatible expressions are derived for lithium-ion cells, power converters, propulsion motors, propellers, well hull elements. is applied to study optimal battery sizing of coastal bulk carrier sailing varying operational conditions. global optimum computed less than second standard desktop computer using open-source software tools. Local sensitivity information encoded by dual variables reveals that increasing cell discharge upper bound 1% decreases total number cells more 1%. occurs because higher capacity reduces their weight, solution. weight saving displacement resistance, further required cells.
